Jan van Dinther of Heesch, NL
10 July 1960 - 10 July 2019.
Jan was a remarkable person. Very intelligent and with a delightful sense of humour. He was a kind and thoughtful man with a quick dry wit and an impressive knowledge of many subjects including music, travel, art, and his profession of chemist. Jan played the guitar well and was the world’s number one fan of Status Quo. He also was a tireless supporter of our music over the years.
We first met at a concert of the Dutch guitar hero Jan Akkerman (Focus / Hocus Pocus) while John and I were on tour in the Netherlands in 2008. Over the past ten years or more we have kept in touch by emails and cards. In 2010, The Lesley Young Duo were invited to perform for Jan’s 50th birthday & his parents wedding anniversary celebration in Oss, NL. It was an amazing experience for us to participate in this unique “rite-of-passage” celebration, including a sort-of roast in verse by guests, and an “Abraham,” a humoursly accurate effigy of the birthday kerrel (guy). It was also the first time John and I performed a song in French, the French-Canadian standard Quand le soleil, at the request of Jan's mother. The next day we had the pleasure of being invited for tea at the van Dinther home.
We last visited with Jan and his family in October 2018, when it had become apparent that his health was in decline. Sadly, he passed away on the 10th of July surrounded by family. Our deepest condolences to the van Dinther family for the loss of Jan who will be greatly missed.
